Forzest (Ezetimibe) - Comprehensive Information

Forzest is a medicatino primarily containing Ezetimibe, available in tablet form for oral administration. It is a potent cholesterol absorption inhibitor used to manage hyperlipidemia.

Indications

Forzest is prescribed for the following conditions:

• Primary Hypercholesterolemia: In combination with a statin or as monotherapy when statins are not suitable.
• Homozygous Familial Hypercholesterolemia (HoFH): As an adjunct to diet and other lipid-lowering therapies, including statins, or when these are not appropriate.
• Homozygous Sitosterolemia (Phytosterolemia): To reduce elevated levels of plant sterols.

Mechanism of Action

Ezetimibe works by selectively inhibiting the absorption of dietary and biliary cholesterol at the brush border of the small intestine. It acts on the Niemann-Pick C1-Like 1 (NPC1L1) protein, reducing the amount of cholesterol transported from the intestine tO the liver. This leads to an increase in cholesterol clearance from the blood and a reduction in total cholesterol, LDL-C, triglycerides, and non-HDL-C levels. It does not induce compensatory hyperproliferation of cholesterol-producing genes in the liver and does not affect the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins.
